EDUCATION

Kalinago Students

In the Kalinago/Carib Territory we have strived to educate our children. Today, the majority of our children attend pre and primary school on the Territory. There are three (3) primary schools, the Salybia Primary, Mahaut River Primary and Baptist Light House Primary (Bataca).

Kalinago/Carib students(60%) also attend the Atkinson Primary, a village on the outskirts of the Territory. In the village of Concord on the west side of the Territory, fifty precent of the students are Kalinagos/Caribs. They hail from the Kalinago/Carib community,Touna.
We are fortunate to have a school for the disabled which also houses a pre-school(in Crayfish River) on the Territory.

We the Kalinago/Carib people of Dominica are however, unfortunate to have a Secondary/High school on our Territory.
This caused a bit of worry for some parents. They hope year after year, their children will be accepted into the neighbouring institutions of learning. The neighbouring schools are the North Eastern Comprehensive School(N.E.C.S) to the north-east and the Castle Bruce Secondary School(C.B.S.S) to the south-east.
Approximately two hundred and sixteen (216) Kalinago Youths presently attend high school.

Universal education was introduced into Dominica in September 2006. This has enabled Kalinagos/Caribs and the wider public of Dominica an oppurtunity resieve an education no matter thier level of learning.
We are greatfull to the Government of Dominica for making this possible. However we are still faced with problems of providing the necessary needs for our children. Jobs are not readly available and some jobs obtained; payments are not sufficient. This is especially difficult based on the amount of children a family has.
